Meet Our Doctors in Altoona, PA
Robert M. Budd, M.D.
Budd graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Pharmacy, and attended medical school at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He interned at UPMC Mercy Hospital before completing his ophthalmology residency at UPMC Eye & Ear Institute. Dr. Budd also completed a glaucoma fellowship at UPMC Eye & Ear, and he is board certified in Ophthalmology.
Robert T. Bechtel, M.D.
Bechtel completed undergraduate training at Messiah College and the Medical College of Virginia and received a degree in Pharmacy. He went to medical school at the Medical College of Virginia and completed an internship at Hershey Medical Center. He went through ophthalmology training at the University of Wisconsin and completed a pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at Northwestern University School of Medicine. He is a board certified ophthalmologist.
Todd A. Sponsler, M.D.
Sponsler graduated from Juniata College with a degree in Biology. He completed medical school at the Pennsylvania State University in Hershey.
Both his internship and residency were completed at Akron City Hospital in Ohio, and he is a board certified ophthalmologist
Donald M. Leckey, O.D.
Dr. Leckey attended the University of Pittsburgh for undergraduate studies and graduated from The Ohio State University College of Optometry. He served in the United States Air Force as Chief of Optometry at Duluth, Minnesota. He was in practice in the Johnstown area prior to joining Altoona Ophthalmology Associates. He enjoys treating glaucoma, ocular pathology and general optometry.
Gifford Piper, O.D.
Dr. Piper attended Washington and Jefferson College and earned his Bachelor of Arts in 2008 majoring in Psychology. He entered optometry school at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University in 2009. He served externships at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation in Bethel, Alaska and the Chesapeake Eye Center in Salisbury, Maryland. Upon graduating optometry school, he returned home to practice excellent vision care in July 2013.
In his spare time, Dr. Piper enjoys spending time with his wife Allyssa, and cats Finn and Freya.
